National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is taking a major step toward modernizing school education by introducing artificial intelligence as a formal subject in the school curriculum. This initiative is designed to prepare students for the rapidly evolving digital world and equip them with essential technology skills needed for future careers.
As part of this plan, NCERT is developing dedicated artificial intelligence textbooks for students in Classes 11 and 12. These textbooks will cover important topics such as the basics of artificial intelligence, machine learning concepts, data analysis, and real-world applications of AI. In addition, students will learn about ethical considerations, including responsible use of technology, privacy, and the social impact of artificial intelligence.
The introduction of AI education will not be limited to higher secondary classes. NCERT plans to gradually introduce AI concepts from Class 3 onwards in a simplified and age-appropriate manner. Younger students will be introduced to basic computational thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills. This step-by-step approach ensures that students build a strong foundation in technology from an early stage.
This initiative aligns with the goals of India’s National Education Policy (NEP), which emphasizes skill-based learning and preparing students for future industries. By integrating AI into school education, the government aims to create a workforce that is ready to meet the demands of emerging technology sectors such as robotics, automation, data science, and software development.
Education experts believe that introducing artificial intelligence at the school level will help students develop critical thinking, creativity, and innovation skills. Early exposure to AI will also help students understand modern technologies that are already influencing everyday life, including smartphones, digital assistants, and online services.
Overall, NCERT’s decision to introduce artificial intelligence as a subject represents a forward-looking move that will strengthen India’s education system and prepare students for a technology-driven future.
